ON THE OTHER SIDE OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY – STRESS

Stress in the workplace

(The truth is out there)

We want to present you with a part of occupational safety that has been unfairly neglected even by authorized companies. The part that is only mentioned along the way works as a footnote in occupational safety documents. Just enough to fulfill the legal form.

We would like to make a departure from the dry, legal definition, what we all have in mind when we hear and think about safety at work.

To show that safety at work properly applied in its entire scope and hidden potentials, can, proven to have a positive impact on the entire life of a company employee (even outside his professional segment, working hours). Therefore, the overall work and financial performance of the company in which he works and ultimately on the employee’s private, family part of life, which I believe should be the most important thing for all of us.

Stress in the workplace, the cause of many financial losses for the company

WHY?

Safety at work properly applied can affect the entire life of a company employee. Stress in the workplace – Tips on how to…

Let’s go back for a moment to the beginning, which is occupational safety; boring, legal: a set of organizational, technical, administrative and administrative measures organized, prescribed and implemented by companies or your employer in order to protect your life and health in the workplace. That is, prevent /prevent the negative effects (dangers, harms, efforts) of your work at the source, so that they ultimately do not have any or as little effect on your life and health, or so as not to lead to injury or occupational disease. Or at least that’s how it should be. Very boring, formal and uninteresting.

For the purposes of this article, let’s single out the keywords: Your life and health What can we say about protecting life? You are alive or not alive (as a binary system 0.1), for that you do not need this article and to tell you how to survive in the workplace, that is, to teach your employer about things that in 99% do things that are part of common sense, conscience, logic and minimal professional experience of every man.

We can talk about this in that boring, dry part of occupational safety from the beginning of the story.

But we managed to survive another day of work, occupational safety managed to do its 10% potential; We go home from work to our loved ones and still with two arms, two legs, with our heads on our shoulders, but do we go happy and satisfied? As the saying goes, a healthy man has 1,000 wishes, a sick man has only one.

Division of employees with regard to satisfaction at work:

Have you ever thought about spending more than half of your life at work surrounded by your work tasks, activities and colleagues?

Do you spend more time with them than you do with your family? Why half a life?

So if we exclude sleep as an unconscious part of life (6-8h), that the average of modern working hours is 8 -10 h, especially if we also consider commuting to and from work, we are left with 6 -8 hours with family, or free time.

Therefore, with a very simple calculation we can get an insight into how time-bound we really are to our work and how this time interval undoubtedly and unquestionably positively or negatively affects us, our health and in the same way on the people around us.

If we take into account the health of employees at work and logically divide it into physical and psychological state, as an inseparable whole, and if we take the proven impact of the mental state of the employee on his physical condition, we come to a part of safety at work (pleasure / satisfaction at work) that is unjustifiably neglected. It is a quality assessment of the impact of mental effort, i.e. their sources (stressors) on the physical and mental state of employees who reduce / interfere with the employee’s full potential, i.e. engagement at work.

So my goal with this article is to show how much an “invisible” source of effort in the workplace can potentially affect the overall financial performance of a company.

According to a survey by the Moj posao portal, 60% of employees are not satisfied with the current conditions of their workplace or the general environment in the company in which they work, 20% say that it could be better, while 10-20% of employees are satisfied with working conditions. Ultimately, we all work to live, not the other way around.

The point is to come home and greet your housemates from the door with a smile, and when asked how it was at work; the answer was nice, constructive, stimulating and interesting! Because in the end you will all understand, sooner or later (better sooner) it is only important for both our life and our health. Make your job as pleasant as being with your family.

Confucius once said, “If your job is a hobby, you won’t have a single working day in your life.” Let’s do something about raising and maintaining work satisfaction.

Division of employees with regard to satisfaction with the profession and employment:

Statistical studies have shown that 20% of employees are scrap (badly put, but this is their relationship and understanding of the current workplace, perhaps even an understanding of professional obligations at all). It follows that for some, now less important reasons for us, we cannot influence their understanding of work and obligations or raise their satisfaction and efficiency at work. But 60-80% of employees are the partial or complete opposite and they need to be our focus.

These are workers who in their essence love their profession, who have recognized it as their life calling, and consequently want to maximize their potential, knowledge, training and enthusiasm for their professional, but also material development and well-being. They want to achieve, confirm and fulfill through their profession, and they are a real generator, a driver of the efficiency of the company’s business.

An inexhaustible and renewable source of clean energy and the most commonand permanently hidden potential of the progress of the entire company. But very often the problem is that in the vast majority of cases it is lost somewhere along the way and most often it is never discovered and used to the end. And this is exactly where occupational safety with your previously mentioned, untapped potential can help you.

Did you know how much the share of human labor in the company’s revenues in high-tech companies / computing / programming, where an extremely high share of professional and intellectual knowledge in the final product of the company, the expertise of the employee himself (IT – computer as the main tool) is as high as 90%?

According to CBS for the last year, IT companies up to 10 employees generated an average of HRK 5 million in annual revenue, which would mean that the employees of the company contributed to this revenue with HRK 4.5 million exclusively through their mental work, specific, professional knowledge, experience and dedication to work.

According to the above, simple calculation we come to the conclusion that such an employee brings revenue to the company of 450 000 kn per year or 1 700 kn per day. Shouldn’t it be in our interest then that people work, that they are at work, that they are healthy, happy and satisfied?

False sick leave:

If we take the results of cihi statistics, that one employee is on average 12 days a year on sick leave, and research has shown that a third of that, even half of the days of fake sick leave, we get an average of 5 working days. On average, this means 8500 kn per year per employee, or 85 000 kn per year according to this observed company of 10 employees.

What are fake sick days? When workers for personal, but increasingly more often and professional reasons choose rather to stay at home rather than come to work. The most common indications for opening sick leave are back pain, shoulders, elbows and psychological problems, and this is all in the period that goes at the expense of the employer.

It means multiple losses for the company! There is no employee’s contribution to the work, you pay that employee who does not work, consequently most often the job is transferred to other employees who are then additionally burdened, less efficient, dissatisfied, additionally stressed, less efficient, go on sick leave and so on a lap.

Dismissals due to dissatisfaction:

The second and perhaps more important item is workers who, due to stress, are ready at this moment to leave the current company and move to another under practically the same or even minor financial conditions, just to escape stress. Statistics show that they are about 5%, or at least one employee in smaller companies (up to 20 employees).

Do you know how long it takes to fully train a new employee as a replacement for a highly qualified, skilled employee who quit? On average one year (450 000 kn per year!!)

The leading cause of false sick leave and job change is work stress.

What is stress? A Canadian psychologist in the 1920s, Hans Selye defined stress as “the sum of the total wear and tear of an organism over its lifespan.” Stress today is defined as a non-specific response of the organism to demands that go beyond its capabilities, i.e. psychosomatic reaction that occurs when an event is assessed as dangerous and / or too demanding, i.e. dangerous for us and important people.

These systems have evolved during evolution in response of the organism to the real danger from the environment, i.e. on specific objects. While short-term stress is inevitable, sometimes necessary and stimulating in a private and business environment, long-term stress is unnatural and harmful because it exceeds the possibilities of our adaptation through these systems.

Causes of shaking at work (stressors):

  • Lack of control/incompetence/insufficient training of employees for work – the feeling that we do not have control over our own work or business duties is greatest. People who do not rule their business obligations are most exposed to health problems.
  • Poor working conditions; an unpleasant or dangerous working environment such as too much noise, too many people or ergonomic problems can be a source of stress.
  • Too much responsibility; taking on additional responsibilities and jobs is extremely stressful. The situation gets worse if we have too much to do, and we don’t know how to say “no” to new tasks.
  • Uncertainty about business roles; if we’re not sure what we should be doing at all and what our responsibilities are, we’re also subject to stress.
  • Broken interpersonal relationships; disagreements with colleagues and/or superiors are often the cause of stressful situations.
  • Dissatisfaction with work and results; if the job doesn’t fulfill us, it’s very likely to be stressful for us.

Consequences of stress in the business environment:

  • Increased number of absences from work,
  • Reduced dedication to work,
  • Accidents/accidents/injuries at work,
  • Increase in the number of complaints or complaints
  • Gossip and rumors
  • Increased number of complaints from customers
  • Increased number of employees leaving the company
  • Poor company image among employees and in public

– reduce the number of false sick days

– increase the satisfaction /comfort of the working environment and the efficiency of employees at work

Prevent workers from leaving the company.

A happy and satisfied employee is the best employee.

Poor working conditions, too much responsibility, broken interpersonal relationships…= Stress, false sick leave,…
